I have a cabinet with some stains on, which have been there for several years. What type of stains are these and how do I remove them?

Is that solid timber or veneer.

Do you know what caused the stains?

If the stains are 'oily' you probably won't be able to clean them off, as oil seeps into the grain of real wood. If it's a veneered finish, you're likely to destroy the finish with sandpaper before you remove the stain, so I think the only option is to cover it with a hard-wearing paint.

They look more like oil to me. Wipe them with kitchen roll and white spirit and see if it transfers to the tissue.

Oil hardens with age and exposure to the air so it's probably too late now. An oily surface will repel paint or wood dye.

Depending on the surface, paint over the top, or a sheet of vinyl (sticky back plastic)?
