Hi. Have just moved into a property which has a tiled basement floor over electric underfloor heating. The tiled floor is significantly cracked and further investigation will be needed to determine exactly why. Obviously there is either movement in the sub-layers or the tiles were badly laid. Lifting one tile hasn't given a conclusive answer.
But, before starting to rip stuff out to determine the cause, my question is will I be able to remove the tiles and the adhesive without completely destroying the heating mats? First inspection seems to suggest the adhesive is pretty well bonded to the matting.
If the destroying the mats is inevitable then it simply becomes rip it all out, down to the tanking membrane and start again. But if the mats can be salvaged then a more careful (and time consuming) approach would be required. It also determines what trade I need to call in first i.e. heating or tiling.
