when applying roughcast top coat what mix would you recommend & would you advise trowelling or throwing on. cheers

The top coat for roughcasting onto, would be a 5.1.1 mix, (5 plastering sand, 1 of white or grey cement, 1 of lime. The mix should contain a combined waterproofer/plasticiser. The chips themselves should be cast/thrown on.

1. Would you recommend using both lime and a combined waterproofer/plasticiser in the mix ? I was under the impression that lime acted as a plasticiser ?

2. Is there a difference between plastering sand and washed building sand ?

I use lime in both coats of render/dry roughcast, along with combined waterproofer/plasticiser. Lime does make mortar "buttery", but it's main purpose is allowing the render to give,, flex, a little,, whereas sand and cement mortar, (without lime) has no flexibility,,, and is liable to crack more easily. Plastering sand is a washed, cleaner sand.
