Hi, just started renovating my house & have discovered a wonderful stone floor underneath the carpet, trouble is the stone is covered in a thick layer of, urm not sure what it is but i am able to chip away at it. in some places it comes away easily but in others it seem to be almost like glue, especially between the cracks.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to remove it, at the moment i'm spending evenings on my knees chipping away...

thanks

Have you tried an industrial paint/varnish/polish remover? Something like Ultimate Paint Stripper....very aggressive but effective.

Its all hard graft unfortunately. As said something like nitromors may work. When recently refurbing an old quarry tiled floor i tried everything, mortar acid acetone etc and nitromors painted on thick left for 15 mins then scrubbed off with fine 0000 wire wool worked best. When finished seal them and wax it.

Wonderful and worth the wait.

P.S Make your self some kneepads.

Hi,i am a conservation builder and specialise in listed buildings. It is lucky to find an original floor these days!A word of caution after you have finished cleaning off the floor,do not under any circumstances seal the floor.Your floor would have been originally laid on lime mortar and the floor breathes through the pointing as it has no dpc which is perfectly normal.Sealing this floor would cause damp problems at the base of your walls at alater date.Hope this is helpful!
