Repair old MDF Flatpack Desk

I have a really good quality MDF flatpack desk that I have had for years.
The only issue with it is the bits (Don't know what they are called) that attach the various sections tougher have a hole in the MDF.

I have used wood glue before but think I may need to use something a bit stronger that fills the whole gap. Maybe some kind of silicone that Drys hard?

Any ideas or should I go to B&Q and get them to cut me out a new section? (not sure how they bits re-attach)?
They look like plastic dowels.

It's time for a new desk. Sure anything can be repaired if you have the know how but it was never good quality in the first place. And it's chipboard not MDF BTW.
