I ran a pencil line down the wood so it ran copied the uneven line of gate to post then tried to cut it with a handsaw. Should I have used a jigsaw? Also, the wood on wall side split when I put long screws in, should I have drilled pilot holes?

Should have fitted an untouched post and adjusted gate to fit .
Not sure what you mean by wood on wall?

Is it a piece to stop the gate blowing back past the post? A tested piece of 2x1 with pilot holes might be better.

Yes, to stop gate blowing backwards. Is this the best way to do that?

It is if it's a 4" post and the gate isn't more than an inch from the post when it's shut.

If it's more that an inch away use a treated 2x2.

I made a gate here about 3 years ago and haven't done it yet

The gate rubs up against post

Is my stopper ridiculous? Because it seems to work so far. Is it not the standard way?
