Hi. Wishing to change a meeting x of 8 and 10mm copper to 15 on all downstairs rads. This will cause me to drain the CH system and as I have a system boiler I will lose HW. As this job will likely take me longer than a day or so, is there a way of retaining HW. Also what thoughts do people have on plastic pipe and push fit connectors for the replacement? TIA.

1. Presumably you have a hot water cylinder. Does it not have an immersion heater?
2. Personally prefer soldered copper as it is more resistant to rodent attack. However, if underfloor and risk of rodents low, I'd prefer plastic push-fit to compression fittings.
3. Presumably you will come up to the radiators in copper - IMO looks much better than plastic.

I have a pressurised cylinder with heater, but gas appears to be far more efficient at heating water. Is there no way of isolating the CH at the boiler? I accept your other points and advice, so thanks.

In principle, if you have enough manual valves at the appropriate points you could isolate the CH and leave the HW live. But it's unlikely, and you'd need to ensure CH isn't called, turn the roomstat right down should do it.
If it's only for a few days electric isn't going to break the bank.

not an expert here - are you changing all the microbre and radiators and manifold ??
we have 10mm microbore and it works well - all new stuff has been in 15mm, where we have added to the system - so 4 rads + towel rail , when we completely refurbished and took the heating pipes onto the loft area and coneected to the min 22mm (mostly done by a plumber, although I added 1 new rad and replaced 4 ) - all the others 7 (i replaced 3 rads, plumber did 4 ) are on the orginal microbore - working well
do you plan to flush out the entire system or all new stuff ???

We had a new combi boiler fitted and all the old tank removed , as it was just not good enough for a bath shower on the taps , and tank not big enough for a pump

as i say not an expert , just wondered -
we have used plastic pipe work on all new stuff (John Guest) - really easy - BUT having had a few issues with rats in sewer eating holes in the flexible waste pipes - i'm aware of rodent issues now
copper goes upto the radiators

In fact next week with my son, i will probably install a new 1000x600 rad in the utility - just got all the kit from screwfix this morning , NOT sure if i will use cooper to radiator or the JG layflat pipework - will see
