Hi,

I want to replace our PVC front door with a wooden one but keep the PVC windows next to it.

I'd cut the door PVC frame out then fix new wooden door frame (highlighted yellow in pic), obviously keeping all the window frames.

Can’t think of any reason why this shouldn’t be possible but please feel free to tell me why it's a dumb idea!

Cheers

I think it would look gash and different materials behave differently in changing temperatures etc.

Not sure why you wouldn’t opt for a nice composite door or new UPVC Door panel which will be far easier. Looks like you would need to reduce the door height to have a wooden frame below the upper window.
Might be suitable in a hobbit house?

Good point about the different materials behaving differently that is a very real concern

True I will loose 4cm from the height but will gain 4cm from removing the pvc trip hazard at the bottom.

i just don't like PVC or composite doors! having a big piece of plastic stuck to the front of the house is plain ugly

Appreciate your thoughts thanks :)

Please be very careful with this idea. Upvc and wood are two totally different profiles. One is 70 ml in thickness the other normally 50ml. So you will be opening up a can of worms trying to butcher the existing set up. If you don’t like plastic change the whole thing you will feel better when you finish, bearing in mind you have to walk through this for the foreseeable future and it is the gateway to your property.

Several houses around here have some sort of replacement doors in UPVC frames that looks like painted wood? No idea what they are actually made from but they seem to have a grain

Are there companies that specialise in replacement doors for existing frames?

Composite frames and doors are designed to look like wood ,feel like wood but have the security of plastic. There’s a good chance your neighbours have that set up. I don’t know of any company who would advise you to complete you’re original idea.

You will be gobsmacked at the quality of composite doors and frames. Different design, colour combinations and still looking like a wood finish. Best of all is the secure by design guarantees, police love and hate these doors. Love them because they are secure, hate them because if they need to break in it’s very difficult.

Ok I think you've talked me into ditching this idea.

I do maintain that these 'wood effect' doors look nothing like wood. Maybe from 5 meters away but get up close they are clearly plastic. Then there is the feel...every time you close it you know its a plastic door! Agree PVC is offers better security/maintenance/ weatherproofing etc but they not the same. Just my dumb ass opinion of course :)

Took me 2mins with a stanley blade to break into a neighbours when they got locked out.

I’m old school and there’s nothing better than a proper wooden door on the right house. In this case if you don’t like the set up why don’t you also look at having the the door and side frames sprayed a different colour , it’s a cheaper option but will change the appearance of your property.

I’ve seen them sprayed they look ok. I personally wouldn’t dream of painting them. Bit like painting my mark one cortina when I was an apprentice SHOCKING, but we didn’t know different in those days. I will forward a website that does it in the north west.
