Well the time has come for me to replace the last of my 100 year old windows. I intend to fit PVC replacements but i'm not sure of how to measure up the holes so as to get the correct sizes. How much leeway should I allow so that fitting will be relativly simple. Can I leave my old inside window sills in place as they match the rest of the woodwork in the rooms.

Ive never tackled this before as last time I got a man in... cost a fortune.

Usually 5mm on all sides to allow if your frame size is out of square, then use plastic packings for equal distance. As the windows is 100 years it could be out of level,so as it your first time why not cut out a square template with 5mm less all round and see if it fit in with resting on the cill etc.You can still use your window cill but check for woodworm or dry rots, might pay you to renew the cill as you're taking the window out.

Yes the template idea sounds OK. I am sure the window holes will NOT be square and want to be sure i dont order windows too big for the hole..
I'll try it and see what happens..
