Replacing a cooker switch/single socket query

Hi,

Can I remove the cooker switch/single socket and replace it with a double socket instead? I ask as I don't have an electric cooker and never will, and an extra socket would be of great use.

I understand that the electrical cable comes straight from the consumer unit, and not on the ring, and is on a high rated fuse; so if I were to change the fuse (wire type) to a lower rating can I just have the double socket running from it instead?

Thanks.

change the fuse holder and base, if present, for a 20A one. Dont just change the wire in the holder: if it blows in future someone will automatically use the wire rating stated on the fuse holder.

However, if the fuse rating is currently 30A, i cant see any harm in leaving it as it is (you probably have 6mm² cable or higher, which can take this current)

Good point, it does use 6mm² cable.
