My house has 30-year-old mahogany double glazing frames, which are still pretty solid – but the little batten strips around the outside of the glass panels are starting to deteriorate.

I wondered if this profile of strip is likely to be available? I think the strips are just pine. I can’t afford to replace the frames, so would just like to do the strips…

PS for some bizarre reason, the frames have been painted by a previous owner, but they’re definitely mahogany

Thanks :D

They are just glazing beads. Take one off with a chisel (they are normally just pinned on) and take it to a local timber merchant. They should be able to supply a replacement. You'll need a mitre saw (hand or power - even a hand saw and a manual mitre box will do) and some way to pin them in place. This is normally an 18 gauge pinner, but the job can be done by pre-piloting and pinning carefully with appropriate length panel pins and a hammer. @^woody^ would probably say it's a job for his ram pin, but that's really only on softwood

Thanks for that very useful info. Will pop down to the timber shop and see what they've got...

A decent supplier should be able to supply either mahogany/sapele or a compatible hardwood species as a stock item. Good luck

Sorry to add to this, but you might find that the profile they offer is slightly different - for that reason it is normal (in the trade) to replace all four sides at one go. Fortunately that may well release some better longer (side) pieces to use elsewhere as replacements. I've found it's generally the bottom pieces which have gone, followed possibly by the top pieces whilst the long side bits do seem to fare better
