Hi all, which is the cheaper option, render and skim or dry line and skim, and what are the advantages and disadvantages? Thanks for your time.[/b]

No answering that could take some time.
In brief:
Cost wise don't think there will be much in it, likely material cost for basecoat and plaster, will be cheaper than dry-lining, but dry-lining will be an easier install.
Drying times of basecoat/plaster will be longer than dry-line and plaster.
Basecoat will give a solid wall to fix to, where dry-lining will have a hollow void.
You will save a little more space in room by using basecoat.

At the end of the day, it could well depend on what you are requiring to be done, and which method is the most convenient to perform in the location/environment.
