Went to replace the above cylinder thermostat with a drayton hts3 cylinder thermostat, However, when I took the covers off, the old one had 4 wiring points, 1for blue wire, 1 for brown wire, 1for black wire and 1 for the earth wire but the new one only has 3. could someboby please explain how I wire up the new one.

The new stat doesn't need an earth wire. The earth is the connection between terminals 4 and 1 on the old stat.
Cut off the exposed cable on the end of the earth cable, tape over, and leave unconnected in new stat.
