I have just bought a new gas fire insert (no boiler) to be place in what used to be a solid fuel opening.
The builder who removed the old fire etc. has taken out the old fire back and I am left with what looks like a load of rubble stuck together with cement. The opening is about 10" higher than the fire insert and exposes the start of the flue (cement lined).

1. Do I need to line the exposed brickwork with fireproof cement?

2. Do I need to reduce the size of the opening or is the new back panel sufficient, (Three piece marble affair with 2 side 'cheeks' and a bridiging piece across the top that would cover up the hole.) ?

The fire is itself is to be connected and installed by a corgi fittter. I am just getting the surround and opening prepared.

thanks in advance.
