Replacing old switches

Decorating my hall so I thought it would be an easy job to replace the old MK 1960's switches with some new MK switches. Unfortunatly the connections on the back are different. Can anyone tell me what wires go where?
The first picture is the switch that works the downstairs hall light and landing light, second picture is the landing light switch. I tried a few different combinations and have had some interesting results!

Any help will be appreciated, its baffled me!
Just noticed the top picture is sideways, the new switch should be at the bottom.
