What's the best way to find out if I need to replace central heating system. Pay a plumber to come and test?

Better off posting pics on here...
Look at the fittings/pipework carefully to get an idea whether it's old and imperial or metric.
Try a magnet for fake copper pipe from the 60s and 70s.

If it's just the wet (water side) central heating sections then any plumber that has good pipe skills can do the work. Advisable to pressure test the system once complete.

Why not pressure test the system as it is? If it passes, you don't need to change, if it doesn't, then you have your answer. If it hold pressure at 4 bar, then it is fine for a sealed or open vent system.
