Hi Everyone,
I’m looking to replace my wooden garage door and window with Upvc, I’m a basic Diyer with a few power tools and I’m 66, so need help with doing this. I’m going to concentrate on the door first as I think this might be slightly easier, I don’t intend replacing the wooden door frame, but door attached to the wooden frame, so, I have measured the door width in 3 places, far right, middle and far left and the smallest is 761 mm, I ah e done the same with the height, and the minimum there is 1980 mm, so, what size door do I need, I presume that I need a bit of a gap, I guess I can sink the door latching bits into the existing frame, or is it better flush, there is currently a 45mm resess in the frame to allow the door thickness, but that can be quite easily changed. Please see attached pictures, the door frame is 45mm, if I change the window as well will 45 my be enough for the ‘overlap’ of the door and window? The door currently has the hinges on the left hand side and opens outwards, I was going to stick with that for the new door, I could change it to right hand opening, but it will probably have restricted opening due to my shed.
Many thanks.
Steve

Have you considered a different type of door entirely, maybe a remote control, automatic roller shutter door? I bought my door, maybe 12 years ago. It began with a pair of hinged timber doors, which I replaced with a troublesome up and over, then finally a modern roller shutter.

I bought it as a ready to install, complete kit, larger than yours, and then it cost me around £450. That was insulated door roll, side guides, motor, brackets, controls, two remotes, all brackets, and manual winder handle, in case of power cuts. I installed it myself, on my own. Brackets, motor centre, and side guides, then attach door to motor centre, supported at the inner end, on a scaffold pole, hanging from the roof.

It lacked any means to prevent the door closing and trapping anything, so I later added an IR beam. One remote is permanently mounted in the car, the second in the kitchen. I added a third wired control, inside the garage, for convenience.

Many thanks for the idea, the front of the garage has an up and over door, but I really want to replace the back one, I’m going to look on Gumtree, eBay and Facebook marketplace, but finding one the correct size could be difficult, there are a fe2 local firms that sell second hand doors and windows, so I’ll get a price from them, but probably expensive, I could probably pay for fitting, but I’d like to try myself.
Thanks, Steve
