Hi have have some granite sets in my garden and they need repointing. I tried with a mortar gun that was ok at the start then jammed up so tried with a trowel but that was not good. Any tips advice for getting the job done and it looking half decent.

I presume you are raking out the old joints first. When all clear, apply a dry mix well brushed into the joints and then leave overnight for ground moisture to initiate setting process then finish off with a very fine and light spray next day to full moisten and complete the setting. That's how I successfully saw to a crazy paved sandstone pathway and I'm reckoning granite cobbles will be no different.

Thanks for the reply yes rake then dry mix I'll have to try that next.

scrape, chisel, angle grinder. What I did today was very soft and came out with scraping.

I have just repointed my patio after following the advice given by this guy. I know yours are setts but I am sure the principle is the same.

Using wet mortar as he's doing is a recipe for staining your slabs. With slabs you want your mortar just damp and then damp down regularly.

The correct way to do granite setts however is with wet mortar rather like grouting floor tiles which takes time and care to wash the surfaces off.

These are the gospel of a master stonemason who worked for me many years ago
