Hi,

I have recently had the paint removed from some brickwork and in the process some of the mortar has been dislodged by the pressure washer. I intend to get the brickwork repointed but the original pointing is a black/grey mortar mix that has been applied as a top finish to a sandy coloured mortar underneath.

It looks as though all of my neighbours houses are the same, ie, they all have a black grey pointing mortar. It's only after removing the paint that I discovered that this is surface only and not all the way through between the bricks.

Is there any technical reason why I should stick to repointing with a black/grey mortar mix or can I repoint it with a traditional colour? The remnants of the original black/grey pointing will need to be raked out anyway before repointing as it is quite thin in places and not that robust. The house is approximately 100 years old if that is relevant?

I have attached a picture of the brickwork below:

Any advice most appreciated.
