Following the failure of the steering motor in my Nissan Micra (55 plate), I've replaced with a second hand steering motor and ecu.

I've no problem staring the car, but 5 minutes into every journey, the red NATS light comes on. It does not affect (yet) my ability to continue driving.

According to the mechanic who did the work, I need to get my car key re-programmed to the new ECU, which is only something that Nissan can do.

However, Nissan say they are unable to perform the reprogramming as it's not a 'genuine' (ie new) part.

My questions are:
- Is it likely that the new ECU will suddenly decide not to work one day because it's not been reprogrammed?
- If it is, is there any way I can get the ECU reprogrammed so that I don't have to pay the £1018+VAT Nissan want for a 'genuine' part?

I am not over familiar with Nissans but I am guessing the NATS is an anti-theft device, i.e. an immobilzer. If the key is not coded to the ECU then I am surprised that the car starts at all. Normally immobilzers block the engine from starting or immediatly cut the injectors if the immobilzer is engaged.

If the ECU does need programming then an independant Nissan specialist will be able to do it. Google search for one in your area then give them a call. An auto locksmith mall also have the required kit to do this as welll

Try a completely different key, to see will it run?

Might be worth asking the breaker for the key from the car you got the control module?
