Looking for advice about how to clean/degrease/restore and protect our oak bannister. We fitted it 8years ago and varnished it with a clear varnish. Over time hand grime has built up and I’d like to restore it to its former condition.

The third picture shows where I’ve attempted to clean it with a wood cleaner (Method) but it’s not working very well.

What are your suggestions?

Clean, light sanding and revarnish .
Thanks, what would you clean it with?

And for sanding, how do I make sure I don’t remove any of the shape detail (curves/grooves etc) on the wood.

Thanks
