Restore old school desk - sand or not?

Hello,

I've bought an old school desk as a Christmas present for our daughter and I'm looking for some help.

The desk is in pretty good condition, however, I'd like to re-varnish or stain it, to tidy it up. I think it's made from solid timber, other than the base of the drawer area, but I'm not 100% sure.

looks like its had some kind of finish on it before.
give it a sand down and stain/varnish it to the colour of your choice.
