Hi there,

I'm planning to build a small retaining wall as my garden is about 35cm lower than my neighbours.

This is the design;

80cm Fence posts (10x10cm) every metre.
20cm cemented in, with 20mm of sand, below that.
20mm gravel around the posts, 20cm deep.

concrete gravel boards at ground level, then two rows of:
47x152mm lengths behind the posts bolted on.

(Giving a hight above the ground of around 38cm.)

trellises on top fitted to the posts.

I was thinking of placing tarpauling on the back of the wall to help protect against damp. With 10cm of control fabric covered gravel for drainage behind and below the wall.

I understand the wall should last for about 10-20 years? I've never layed a brick wall so I'm some what put off of building one and can't afford to pay someone else to do it.

Any and all advice welcome.

For a wall retaining so little you could use dry mortarless wall systems which are super easy to build and will last longer than a timber solution.

Such as http://www.tobermore.co.uk/secura_products.aspx

Or concrete some sleepers in vertically.

If you do go with your chosen design forget the sand. Use dpm on the back of it but only if you have weep holes etc and drainage as you have said.
