last summer i had my bungalow rewired. cost a couple of grand. ever since the switches keep tripping. at first it was when we turned the pond pump on or off. we got the electrician back but he said the pond was on a different circuit to the house and would not affect it --but it does. he checked all the points in the house. but it still trips sometimes 2,3 or 4 times a week. sometimes just when we turn off a light. sometimes when we are not doing anything at all. could understand it a bit if it was when we turned an appliance on but it goes whatever. it is usually the big switch (spit load??) that trips. can anyon advise me on this.?

RCD nuisance tripping (which I think is your problem) can be a pain to track down, and involves isolating appliances until the culprit is found. By isolating I mean completely unplugged from the mains, not just turned off. Suspect watery stuff like showers, washing machines, kettles etc.

The pump has to be a serious contender, although you electrician seems to have told you that it’s not connected to the RCD side of your consumer unit.
Could you completely disconnect the pump for a few days to see if the problem goes away?
Don’t worry about the fish, they taste nice with chips.

Another possibility is a crossed neutral, but that is something your sparkie should have avoided during the installation. That said, you say you have had the problem since the rewire, and it happens when you turn off the lights, which are not normally connected to the RCD side.
If good old detective work does not uncover a faulty appliance, get your sparkie back to do some serious checking and testing.

It might help if you post pictures of your consumer unit and the gubbins around it.

Sounds to me like a 100mA S Type RCCB as the main switch.

Is that the case buntin?

A pond pump should, okay, must have some kind of RCD protection 30mA trip.
