Ring main Spur

Reading through, I take it that if you take a Spur from the ring, in the floor boards, you only use one 2.5mm cable? looking at one of my existing double sockets I see that it has 'two' cables in it. I imagine one from each end of the ring. Many thanks

I've done this quite a few times but I've always used a 13 Amp fused spur since the main 30 Amp fuse is rated too high to give instant protection to single 2.5 sqmm cable. The fuse should be as close as possible to the connection to the ring main.

Be sure to maintain the integrity of the earth connection and cover bare earth wire with green-yellow sleeving.

Again, refering to domestic wiring, ring mains etc, is their a site that gives some circuit diagrams, showing different types of spurs etc, one of my sockets seem to have 3 cables running into it!

As for one of your sockets having 3 cables the third cable is a spur. you can not spur offf of this.

Many thanks for your help. I can now see that the third wire comes from the socket that is spured off the other side of the wall. So, to spur from the ring under the upstair floor boards, I need a 30A junction box, and a length of 2.5mm2 cable. I would only need to break into just 'one' cable. Just checking. To spur from another socket I would have to go around the wall with the cable, I think this would be bad practice.

what you say is correct, but if it helps it may be an idea if you could continue the ring and have no spur at all.

Where you "break the ring" you will obviously have 2 ends, if you were to connect a cable to each of these two ends and extend / connect both together in the new socket you would be extending the ring and have no spur.

Thanks breezer, I can see the logic in that now.

One thing I should add in the 'disasters' forum. I made a lovely job of changing a cingle socket to a double, until at a dinner party tonight, when wwe closed the serving hatch doors ~ the plaster/paint was out by 5mm ~ oh s&6t, said the Mrs. I siad ti her when I do the other socket would she like the kitchen to have a walk through to the toilet, I'm now wearing my dinner.
