For the past few weeks the ring main switch in my fuse box (that controls all the wall sockets) went off a couple of times for no reason. And I had to push it back on. It happened at different (random) times of the day and at these times I did not switch on anything. It seems the only appliance always on in my house is the fridge.

Today the British gas electrician (I have homecare plan) came and tested all the sockets and all are fine. And yet, it happened again two hours after he left!

Any idea what could be the cause of this?

Thanks a lot.

Probably a faulty appliance, try unplugging different things to see if it resolves it (admittedly a fridge freezer isn't a good thing to leave unplugged but could be causing it!)

Do you have more than one socket circuit protected by different RCD/RCBOs
If so unplug F/F, plug it in to the other circuit (via extension lead) and see if it trips that.

Two major suspects:

Outside sockets etc - especially if it has been raining
Heating systems: leaking pump or valve trickling water onto electrics..

Check if the tripping is the same time, does it co-incide with when the boiler starts up eg....
