Roofing specification - advice please

Hi,

Our roof circa 1962 is Concrete marley roofing tiles over a tar paper like material on top of some kind of fibreboard.

the fibreboard has sagged between the roof trusses and in some areas broken down completely also the tiles are getting past their best so we are considering replacing the roof.

When comparing quotations are some materials better than others? What are the best materials to replace the fibreboard and tar paper?

If the tiles are in good condition and not leaking there is no need whatsoever to look at getting the roof re-done. Many houses do not have any felt at all anyway.

That does not apply to any concrete interlocking tiles

In the OP's case the fibreboard is acting as a sarking board - which IIRC, is mandatory in Scotland

You may be able to use something like OSB, but better insulated products are available - google for sarking boards.

A breather membrane will replace the tarred paper nowadays, but again check if this applies to Scotland as you may need to use bitumen felt

The 'best' depends on several factors but the usual way to go is osb with a breather membrane. Sarking isn't required but preferable, IMHO.

Have noticed the recent new builds by Barratt, persimmon etc are building without using sarking.
Any extensions we have ever built have always had 9mm osb with breather membrane specified.
This is the case in the central belt no idea if the regulations differ the further north you go.
