Room thermostat for Vaillant Thermocompact

Hi,

I'd like to install a room thermostat. I'm not worried if its hard wired over wireless.

I have a Vaillant Thermocompact installed in 2003. Not sure of exact model number. It is currently controlled with a Lifestyle timer unit.

Would the Vaillant VRT 30 work? If not could you recommend an alternative?

If it is compatable with the boiler and programmer, I see it requires connection via 3 wires. What size wires would be needed 1mm?.

I have been reading up.

The only question I have is:

If I purchase a Vaillant VRT 30 can I connect that direct to the Boiler or will it need to connect to the Drayton Lifestyle LP522 programmer to work in conjunction with it?
