Rough Ceiling Surface

Weve moved into a 1960 house where the ceilings seem to be a type of fibreboard (like chipboard); the joints are taped and the ceilings painted. The surfaces aren't great but I'm not that keen on artex.....any paint / roll - on products out there to give a good finish (rough is fine!) that will 'mask' what's there? We've tried Polycell Smoothover (c*ap!)

and are trying B&Q Textured Paint but if it does what it says on the tin (!) it'll only cover hairline cracks.
Any ideas?? THAAAAAANX!

Textered paint isnt really that thick and may not cover as much as you hope..Any textured surface could be risky if the ceiling is a little flexible..it could break off..

Have you considered a blown vinyl?...non patterned type?
