Is the glass already in the window frame ? if so, best to have a new pane of glass with hole cut out ready. Might be best to let the glazier do it for you as they have more experience and might save you money !
It's a small pane in a Crittall (spelling?) type of window - there is a pane there now but I can make another to replace it (here's one I made earlier)

'Fraid I chickened out the last time we had to install a fan in one of the loos, took out the (single glazed) window and replaced with a bit of marine ply, jigsawed a circle and went from there.
Now the entire window has been replaced with a tilt and turn double glazed window, so just open one of them each morning, security fastenings all it to tilt from the bottom so no one could get in, nor the children get out, but I can twist it so that the window works as a normal window and hinges, and opens, on the left.
Critall windows are a BIG pane (spelling?). If you can afford to change to wood frames (I just don't like plastic ones) you will find the comfort goes up, and the heating bills go down a lot. We did and the effect was amazing. Much nice rto look at, and much warmer.
