Hi,

I have just had a wall knocked through, into one room, in my cottage.

As I understand, the RSJ needs to be fire protected with plasterboard.

I was wondering if there are any alternatives than plasterboard, that are acceptable to building regulations?

Is there any way to keep the steel exposed (perhaps via some sort of coating or something) and still meet the regulations?

Take a look at PPG's range of products. They're used to dealing with vast industrial sites and stadiums, but there are domestic suppliers of their products too.

The problem is whether the inspector will accept any paint coatings in a domestic environment or in the specific situation.

Sanding a coating down ready for the next season's colour from B&Q always comes up on the risk assessment.

Fulham and Chelsea are finished if she doesn't. Intumescent coated steel beams are pretty much de rigeur round there these days.
