Got an existing opening going into a new single story extension that is 2900mm wide, there is a steel on the inside skin, just a flat metal bar on the outside skin, I was going to swap the outside skin metal bar for a steel at 3.2m 180mmx102, is a structural engineer needed for this as going through planning permission? As surely anything is better than what is actually there at the minute,

If you are removing the support from the door/ window (whatever that may be) then I should imagine SE calcs will be required unless the original support is on record as being adequate. Best ask BC.
