Hi

Recently found through a post on here that seemed to end up in an argument and got closed that my wall ties are failing which I've now resolved with helical ties. I also spotted the lintel is rusting and has blown the mortar joint.

This lintel spans a window of about 2.2 meters. I've googled and watched many videos and every replacement I've seen uses the same sort of single leaf lintel but I don't want to get stuck in and find I have the wrong type.

Is there a non destructive way to determine what type I need?

House has a narrow 60-70mm cavity with brick inner and outer. The lintel is above a ground floor window which has 15 courses of brick above followed by a other window of the same size.

Could I get away with a L10 style lintel or domi need one that supports both the inner and outer?

Ignore the line!

Thanks

You might not need a new lintel just for a bit of rust.
Hard to say what needs to go in without knowing what's already there.

When you say it is rusting and blown the mortar do you mean internall or externally. Are you saying it is a metal lintel or it has blown the concrete due to the rebar rusting How bad is the rusting you might get away with rust treatment and paintif it is all metal. It could be a catnic lintel which holding a strong magnet under the bricks above the mortar might indicate

Surface rusting is not usually a problem, but I'd advise deeper checking just to eliminate deep pitting which could lead to failure.

Thanks for the replies.

I pulled a pretty big chunk of rust from the joint.

You can just about see it in there, I didn't rake this out it was falling out. Wall ties have also failed on the same wall.

You can just about see it here, I'd dint remove this mortar it crumbled out.

I guess taking a few bricks out is the only real way to know for sure, I was just curious if there was a way of working it out somehow. All the videos on YouTube seem to use the same type.

The house is brick on both inner and outer with a 60mm cavity

Just for my own curiosity, it is an ex LA house? I ask because it is unusual to find a house of around that age with double skin brickwork when block inner is far quicker to build.

Yes it is ex council, some of the brickwork is shocking! I installed new wall ties recently and one tie went into a half brick of the inner leaf that was completely loose in there and the hammer action of the SDS sent the brick straight through the plaster!

Sometimes the SDS action can cause more damage than you are attempting to rectify. When faced with iffy masonry, I tend to use a good sharp standard masonry dill bit at low speed without any hammer action and as/if it blunts I will always tickle up on my bench grindstone to save overheating the bit.

O I wasn't drilling when this happened I was driving in remedial wall ties, you pre drill holes and then use hammer only to drive the ties in. I was clueless until I came inside at the end of the day and found a brick in my hall way!
