S.W.A. Termination?

If using 3 core ( the 3rd core used as an earth) S.W.A. do i still have to use glands on the ends to maintain cpc continuity?

Both ends of cable are to be connected to insulated cu's

You don't have to use a gland but you do have to connect the steel armour to your earth system (for the reasons RF has given below) and normally a gland and banjo is the easiest way to do it.

You still need to earth the armouring wether a seperate earth is used or not. This is so that if something such as a spade penetrates the cable, and hits the live conductor, the spade will be earthed by the armour and cause a short between live and earth, which will blow the fuse (Automatic disconnection of supply)


If the armour is not earthed, the spade could penetrate the cable and hit the live conductor. This would cause the spade to become live, possibly electrocuting whoever is holding it.

I have connected phase,neutral and earth as normal was just wondering if armour had to be used as earth as well

Yes, unless your CU is very heavy duty plastic then you'll have to terminate the SWA into an adjacent galv adaptable box or the tail will wag the dog....

Plastic enclosures are not very good for terminating SWA into using the normal banjos, it is possible to sandwich the banjo between two locknuts inside the encloure or you can get special piranhna lock nuts which clamp the gland differently. Another option is to terminate the SWA into a metal adaptable box.
I take it you know the work you are carrying out is notifiable to your LABC under part P?

Advice all correct and good, who am I to argue, but have you ever tried to put a spade through SWA? You're all obviously a lot stronger than me. Took me about an hour to dissect my SWA (all done before PP of course)

It isn't the spade you need to worry about. That will probably not get through the armouring. But a sharp pointed fork prong or pick-axe might go between two strands of single lay armouring and reach the conductors.
