When I stripped it down, turned out the "professional" pipe monkey decided those sealing fins weren't needed and cut them off. Must have made installing much less bother. Just to cap off the job, he stuffed a bit of newspaper in the gap and topped it off with some silicon.
So, scrapped out the bodge, sealed it with plumber's mate and job done.
