Sandstone as backfill and concrete mix.

Hi All.

Please be kind. I'm in the early stages of an extension and our first few courses of block work have gone in.

We've got alot of space either side of the block work that needs backfilling.

We have an awful lot (about 32t) of sandstone Gabion rock. not limestone gabion. its a yorkshire sandstone

My question is, can I crush the the gabion stone and use it for back fill on both the outside and inside of the block work/or just one side? or does it have to be any particular material? or indeed 'not' any particular material. I ask because of the water retention properties of sandstone and curious if this will this cause any issues later on.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

My thoughts would be that it would be an awful lot of work to crush it. Could you not just put it in as loose fill then pour quarry waste or similar in to fill up the air gaps. I don't think Yorkstone would be as absorbent as red sandstone.
