I need to build a small (3m x 60cm) retaining wall in my garden at the side of the drive to hold soil back.

I've got a load of sandstone blocks. They're irregular sizes, rectangular dressed face but sort of taper to the back.

Would I be best building a concrete block wall behind first and then doing the sandstone? It's just that this would take up more space. But then it may be more stable.

I'm fairly good with brick, but never attempted stone walling before.

As it is only a couple of feet high, and provided the sandstone is above 100mm wide then i would say just use sandstone.

yes i would build something at the back of the sand stone,as you said they taper in at the back so after you lay a course you can fill in the gaps with a dryish mix ready for another course and so on and...., thats if your using a mortar mix at all! nice flat bed each time :)
