We seem to have a noise that comes from the pipe leading out of the cylinder when we turn the taps on. It is intermittent which is confusing us even more. We find it is worse first thing in the morning when we turn the shower on or flush the toilet.

The noise lasts for no more than 5 seconds but it is LOUD. It sounds like a very heavy table being dragged along a floor.

Any ideas suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick reply Andy,

My system is a pressurised and I only have a tank in the loft for the central heating side, which is currently turned off.

The noise seems to come from pipework near the expansion vessel. However I checked this for a failed diaphragm and checked the air pressure, these all seem ok.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Paul

How old is the system? Have you considered that the noise is being generated by the pressure reducing valve 'topping up' the cylinder, and the pipework is transmitting/amplifying the sound.
Test for this by temporarily turning off the cold water inlet to the pressure reducing valve (PRV) before recreating the conditions for the noise you hear.

I've owned the house 10 years, but I think it was build in 1999, so getting on a bit now. It could be the valve topping up, strange it's started getting noisy, might need overhaul/replacement.

I'm an engineer by trade, but don't have the qualifications for working on pressure vessels so I will need someone with the tickets to do this for me. I would have just bought all the three valves and replaced them. But I'm not sure if they need the pressures setting or they come pre set.
