Satin Varnish

I have just sanded the floorboards in our lounge - now ready for varnishing. When I looked into the various satin varnishes the shop assistant recommended putting a layer of gloss on first to soak into the wood, then 2 layers of satin.

Is this good advice, or is he trying to sell me 2 types of varnish!
We are looking at getting Dulux varnish.

Any advice, greatly appreciated.

may i suggest seeing as you only want to do the job once, you buy a small tin of said varnish and try a test area, that way if you dont like the colour you have not wasted a lot of time
