scaffolders tend to use the ubiquitous, off cut of plank, plus lugged bottom plate, then upright pole or tube.

changes in ground level is not a problem with a traditional; stanchion, pudlock, stretcher and under-sling type scaffold, though a reasonably level surface is needed for 'quickform' scaffolding.
