Scottish Gas wields the axe

they should have had a bigger lock on the meter, must have been heavy carrying all those 50p to the van

Can that be classed as stealing? methinks that they are on a sticky wicket here and a lot of staff could be applying for unfair dismissal.

It's a bit sad that they (management) get egg on their faces and are so embarassed they take it out on the staff, human nature after all is to look for a bargain.

Doing it once and not saying anything could be looked on with a bit of mercy, but 800 times? Its theft and deception, plain and simple - in a business where the employees have access to sensitive customer information (including access to financial history/bank details) then honesty & integrity are paramount.

but they wern't doing anything fraudulent involving anyones details or the like, they merely exploited a loophole, for which the only blame i can see falls with the management for not stopping it sooner. Why don't they admit they cocked up and reinstall the staff?

Give over....If their was a cupboard full of tenners in the office and the management forgot to lock it would it then be ok for everyone to help theirselves?

Its theft.

agreed that would be theft, but the difference is that the staff were merely buying bracelets, just because they earn too many credits is the firms fault. I'd love to see this contested in court, i'd put money on the outcome.

Shouldn`t that read.....Wields the Claymore ........or as the Scottish actress said to the Bishop.........That`s nae a Claymore, Tha`s a skein`Dhu

if your caught with your hand in the till you can always say i though the change would do me good

They are in **** street legally. The Staff have not committed theft nor have they done anything that their terms and conditions would not cover. The mistake is with either Scottish Gas or the QDOS operations company.

I would suspect that if the staff got together they could get a lot more than £27K from the company as branding them as theives in the press is certainly slander and defamation which could harm their chances of securing another position due to the manner of their dismissal.

It is yet another example of staff being a little silly and the employer blaming them for their indifferent management and incompetence.

Shame on Scottish Gas, and I hope they get screwed in court.

You really have this bad habit of making statements you cannot substantiate ... Can we be clear for everyone reading this thread ... You are not a member of the legal profession.

You, therefore, like the rest of us are not in a position to say whether or not these people have actually committed an offence.

My opinion for what its worth is that, whilst they may or may not have committed a crime, their integrity is questionable to say the least and they all would have known that what they were doing was wrong ... This alone should be enough to dismiss them IMO.

If your bank erroneously credits your bank account with £1,000,000 do you think you have the right to spend it?
