It sounds like there could be issues with the exhaust, i.e lambda sensors / catalytic converter but the lamp may go off on its own accord in time.
As for the temperature gauge, it's going to be a sender problem or maybe a missing thermostat.....the ideal running temperature is around 95 deg.

Ok the nipper has run the car for a couple of weeks now and he is continually putting oil in it is smoking quite a lot now, Does this indicate that the rings are shot !
