What are the wings for on a self-drilling screw.

I believe they are to remove the swarf.

If you are connecting timber to steel they firstly expand the pilot hole produced by the two fluted point to give a clearance hole for the threaded portion of the fastener. Once the point has drilled into the steel the wings are often wiped off (partly or fully) as the threaded portion cuts through the metal
