Self-Levelling Compound Question

I've read up loads of posts on these forums and elsewhere, and researched different types of product available, but I'd like to ask another question and see if anyone has any insight.

I have a garage floor standard concrete slab with almost certainly no DPM below. The existing concrete is crumbly in places, and dirt and leaves have blown inside over the years before we brought the house. It's dusty and needs a good broom out!

I want to turn the garage into a workshop/storage area as it's a decent size; 4.4m x 3m, and once the roof is repaired and lighting installed should be a useful area.

Eventually we will convert the garage along with an extension, so I'm not looking for a life-long solution, just to be able to have a clean and level floor.

So my question is: will I be okay using a levelling compound over the existing slab, then putting down DPM and a utility floor solution (such as floor tiles/vinyl/cheap laminate flooring), or do I 100% need to put DPM down first? My concern is then that I'd need a much thicker concrete base over the DPM.

What kind of thickness should I be looking to put down? Obviously depends on how un-level the floor is currently, but I want it to be reasonably strong.

Thanks.
