SELV garden lighting kit with 12 VAC power supply and "plug & play" wiring. The transformer is capable of putting out several amps, but does not have any visible fuse or overload in the secondary. What is likely to happen in the event of a short circuit?

Some wound transformers have a thermal trip ( fuse ) buried in the windings. Some will self reset after the over heated winding has cooled down. Others are not resetable and the transformer cannot be used again.

Some electronic "transformers" ( they are really a switched mode power supply ) have small fusible components that may or may not be (self) re-setable.

Some cheap ( and nasty ) ones just melt the case and fall apart. ( recent experience )
