Setting roof slates out before installing

What's your own best method of laying out your slates before laying. Is it 5 slates on top of each other every 2ft space, 10 slates every 3ft etc...

And when laying, how many slates do you lay before going to the next run. Reason I ask, I always see roofers slate in a diagonal pattern instead of finish a full row then onto finish the next row. Whys this!

How many vertical chalk lines do you set every few meters if at all.

Pics of your own methods would be good.

I'm assuming you are in England if you are setting them out in a specific way.

I'm in Scotland and we just load the slates onto the planks we stand on as we don't batten the roof out.

What do you mean you don't batten the roof out. What do you nail slates on to then?
 
Scots roofs generally have sarking boards.
