Every now and again the drainage from the upstairs flats, and my groundfloor flat leading outside gets blocked causing the effluence to back up through my toilet. Not nice. Is there any equipment that can be used - like some sort of valve - that will allow stuff to go out, but not come back the other way, that I can demand my landlords put into operation?

Do the drains need rodding?
I'm pretty sure you can get one way valves I think they're mainly to stop flood water coming back up the system. Can't see how you can demand one is fitted though. Ask on a Tenant or landlord forum.
