Hi All,

1st floor Bathroom newly refitted 2 years ago. Never had an issue.

Now have a sewage smell.
More recently shower trap now gurgles when toilet is flushed.

Waste runs a short distance to a 3 storey stack, that goes up beyond the ridge line. I can't see the top but (I presume) has a vent at its top.

Toilet is a wall hung pan. Fully tiled wall.
All traps etc are hidden.

There are two bathrooms on the floor above.
They use the same waste.
They have AAVs fitted just behind them,l.
They have a much longer run to the waste.
They have no issues. No gurgling etc.

Grateful for thoughts on what the cause might be and best way to go about sorting.

Many thanks

I am not a plumber but I suspect that when you flush a toilet it creates a syphon effect which pulls the water out of the shower tray.

I am only guessing, but it might be a partial blockage in the sewer.

Flush the loo, put some water in the shower and see if the smell persists.

Thanks wondering if beyond a blocked drain if it could have anything to do with the stack/waste?

Thanks

I'd guess that the shower is plumbed into the same run as the toilet and the AAV has stuck, so now flushing the toilet sucks the water out of the shower trap. Can you test the AAV?

I don't know where the AAV is for this.

Toilet is wall hung.
Goes on a short run to the waste stack.
Waste Stack is 3 storeys high, and goes above the ridge line.

Not sure where the AAV is, hoping it's not 3 storeys up

This was all fitted 2 years ago, ie all pipework (including the waste stack, and all plumbing in the house is new)

It also doesn't seem to make the shower gurgle every time.

Top of the soil stack has one of these on it.
Vents above the ridge line.

You say it doesn't happen every time. I would be inclined to think it is more likely to happen when you flush solid "materials". Why not spend some time repeatedly flushing the loo with nothing (read: no materials) in it and see what happens?

BTW, immediately after flushing the loo, do you see the water in the pan rise upwards very slightly

If the soil stack is a straight run, I would be looking at the main sewer.. Again, I am not a plumber.
