We recently got our bathroom suite changed.
The connection from the back of the toilet pan was smaller than the existing waste pipe so the plumber had to fit a narrower pipe to the wast pipe to allow the connection.

Since then there has been a bad sewage smell that wafts every so often.

Could this be that the plumber hasnt sealed the bit of pipe he fitted to the waste pipe resulting in it not being air tight?

Im considering having a good go over it myself with silicone to make sure its air tight.

Any other ideas what might be causing the smell if its not that?

It will be an air gap in the connection (it cannot be coming up through the loo as there is a trap designed into this that is full of water). You might try a reip to a DIY store and check the range of sealing type tapes...
