Hi,

I have purchased a new shed and was just wondering what the best way to treat it is. Can I just paint it with a paint like Cuprinol or do I have to use a preserver first? Does the Cuprinol do the same job as the preserver?

Many thanks

I guess you mean the garden shades range when you talk about paint? Yes, Cuprinol is a preserver :)

Cuprinol Wood Preserver is a wood preserver, but most of the products they sell in volume are decorative finishes. The garden stains usually leave a waxy film which repels rain until it weathers away. Oils reduce water penetration but do not prevent it getting damp.

If you seriously want to protect long-term outdoor timber which is exposed to damp and insects, the genuine preservers are quite expensive, and smothered with safety warnings, because they are poisonous and contain protective chemicals in a solvent. They soak into the wood. Wood in contact with the ground especially needs to be soaked, and it is best to avoid it.

Some timber and garden products are treated before you buy them, but you need to re-treat surfaces where you have cut, planed or drilled them and removed the protection.

After they have dried you can apply an ornamental stain or paint.
